About School of Biomedical Engineering
Tsinghua University founded the Division of Biomedical Engineering in 1979, which is one of the first biomedical engineering disciplines established in China. In 2001, the Department of Biomedical Engineering was established, which was subordinate to the School of Medicine of Tsinghua University. In 2022, the School of Biomedical Engineering was established, as part of the overall development of Tsinghua Medicine, a new academic healthcare system comprising multiple related schools, research institutes, and affiliated hospitals.
Over the years, the Department of Biomedical Engineering has adhered to the innovation of new mechanisms, new methods and new equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of major diseases driven by basic research, realized the development of the whole chain of basic research, technology research, transformation and application, and social services, given full play to the supporting role of interdisciplinary disciplines of Tsinghua University, and promoted the development of medical discipline groups and the cross-integration of medical engineering at Tsinghua University.
The School of Biomedical Engineering has a strong foundation with high-level and high-quality education and research, with a focus on translational, inter-disciplinary research. At present, there are four key research directions: medical imaging, neural engineering, micro-nano medicine and tissue engineering, and biomedical instruments and equipment. Among them, the Medical Imaging Research Center is a university-level scientific research platform. At the same time, there is extensive cross-faculty research such as neural modulation, precision surgery, nuclear medicine imaging, and rehabilitation engineering. Much of the research cuts across Tsinghua University’s different schools and institutes, Tsinghua Medicine’s affiliated hospitals and clinical disciplines, and other hospitals in Beijing and China. The School has built an extensive platform for the transformation and application of bioengineering and technological discoveries.
The School of Biomedical Engineering currently has more than 300 full-time students, including undergraduates, masters and doctoral students. In 2008, the Tsinghua University-Johns Hopkins University Biomedical Engineering Joint Research Center was established, and in 2018, it began to establish a dual master's degree training program with Johns Hopkins University.
