Position Summary

Under general supervision, tests, calibrates, repairs, fabricates, modifies and maintains electronic/electro-mechanical equipment of moderate complexity.  The equipment is varied and frequently non-related as well as being located in multiple and diverse departments of the institution.  Types of equipment include life support, resuscitation, diagnostic and therapeutic equipment used in a patient care or medical/biological environment. 
Primary responsibilities for this 2nd shift position will be after hours preventive maintenance and repairs of medical clinic equipment in the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics main campus and offsite locations.

Pay Grade: 13 -

Percent of Time:  100%

Schedule:  Monday – Friday; 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM.   Some overtime may be required to access equipment, cover absences, emergencies, and peak periods of operation.

 Biomedical Equipment Technician


  • Broad-based, in-depth knowledge of electronic theory, circuitry and components.
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry, physics and human physiology.
  • Ability to apply troubleshooting logic in diagnosing and repairing electronic equipment.
  • Experience with wide variety of mechanical hand and shop tools.
  • Experience using electronic test and diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics and technical documents.
  • Ability to be punctual and maintain personal appearance in accordance with dress code.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate professionally in a customer service environment during written and verbal interactions.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, walk long distances and work while standing for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to lift in excess of fifty pounds.
  • Willing to work flexible hours in order to meet equipment maintenance needs around clinic schedules.
  • Willing to respond to after-hours calls as part of a rotating on-call schedule.


  • A.S. degree in Biomedical or Electronics technology; and
  • Successful completion of the Biomedical Equipment Technician Trainee Program; or
  • Two years of experience troubleshooting, repairing and testing electronic or electromechanical equipment.
  • Must meet the University of Iowa Fleet Services program rules and regulations, due to the ability to drive University vehicles.

 Desirable Qualifications

  • Previous Biomedical Equipment Technician experience.
